I'm told a big part of it is bluntly that older Black voters really like the man. Which may come back to the part where a lot of the policies young activists decry his part in were *popular* at the time with who are now older Black voters. Which is heresy.

Yeah there's stuff here that's really hard to talk about, especially online, and yet clearly true Like the fact that "tough on crime" messages were extremely popular in Black communities in the 90s

I hate to write it off to something as bland as charisma, but he IS someone who has a broadly likable personality and public image. I mean, even the memes of his vice presidency.

Those can all be false indicators, but there's still some power in having the ability to really work a room and work the cameras.

My understanding, acquired via my mom, is that it's because he's nice. Like, he shows a personal interest in people's problems, in a seemingly genuine way, and shows care about them long term. It's the best reason I've heard.
