On the day the world ends, there'll be a couple who fall in madly in love for the first time, and another couple bitterly breaking up Someone will be filled with hope and excitement they just started a new job and someone else will be flipping out over getting fired

It's been a while since I watched it, but IIRC one of the fascinating things about it was that unlike Homer Simpson, Earl almost never rises to the occasion by the end of the episode. He's mostly saved by his wife and his incredibly bright teenage children.

The one where he does rise to the occasion because Robbie pulls a Back to the Future on him (impersonates a space alien to trick him into turning his life around) ends up having a super cynical ending
