Tonight had a drink with two of the smartest political thinkers I know, both of whom were like “the Democratic Party is the main obstacle, we shouldn’t vote for Biden and we should get others, at least in blue states, to write Bernie in”

If they are the “smartest political thinkers” you know, I think you really, really, REALLY need to expand your social contacts.

You know, if you were actually serious about this, you could try electing more left wing people to local, then state positions, and then legislatures.

Just trying for the Presidency without building a coalition and then pretending you can’t tell the difference between Trump and Biden may not be wise.

I'm not saying there aren't serious structural reasons third parties are probably unviable in the US But a major expression of that problem is people who think of themselves as far left only even remembering they exist for the sake of casting a protest vote for the presidency

Getting really mad about the presidency specifically and organizing around being a spoiler for the presidential election only makes it *less* likely that a third party will ever gain traction Parties build loyalty based on what they achieve, not what they block

Okay, then you have to win the primary The idea that by "punishing" the "elites" by losing them the election they'll just give you the nomination next time isn't how it works
