Tonight had a drink with two of the smartest political thinkers I know, both of whom were like “the Democratic Party is the main obstacle, we shouldn’t vote for Biden and we should get others, at least in blue states, to write Bernie in”

I’m confused: what’s the difference between not voting for Biden and writing in Sanders? In consequence I mean?

There is no difference at all, in most states (40 out of 50) Because Sanders isn't a qualified write-in candidate (he isn't allowed to file as one, under DNC rules, in order to be eligible in the D primary) the poll worker is instructed to ignore it as though it were blank

Sorry, it's 42 states There are eight states where write-ins are counted without qualification, IA, OR, NJ, NH, PA, RI and VT

However, even then, Oregon officially just has the machines count write-ins as votes for "Other", and they only have someone read and write down the write-ins if "Other" actually beats one of the official candidates Getting Bernie to actually show up in the results is difficult

(I don't know how it works in all eight states, they just had an article about this in Oregon the last time we went through this in 2016)
