The best universal chemical disinfectant we have and are likely to ever have is bleach - chlorine ions will tear apart any organic molecule There is nothing better for wiping down contaminated surfaces than dilute bleach

When I did cat rescue stuff they had us dip our hands into bleach solution before interacting with each new cat to stop the spread of calicivirus - which IIRC is quite a bit hardier than coronavirus against alcohol and soap (no lipid shell)

The reason we don't use bleach as hand sanitizer is all the things that make bleach really good for disinfecting water - it lasts a long time and it kills everything, including humans - is also why you don't want it on your hands Hence having to wash our hands afterwards

That's why alcohol is kind of a perfect solution for hand sanitizer - it's generally effective on germs, it doesn't do much to your skin even if you get too much on you, and it evaporates on its own That's what it's for For cleaning doorknobs etc you can use any other chemical
