To be honest, speaking as a poli sci major, social democratic policies *are* considered socialist in the field. They're just not *Marxist*. Like, a big chunk of my "Socialism and Its Critics" course was about the legacy of Bernstein and the Nordic model.

(Those are two separate things of course but are both examples of the social democratic movement.)

Of course, there are some cases where the social democratic parties leaned so far toward the center in the 1990s that they're arguably not socialist anymore. But the policies their predecessors put in place were definitely considered socialist by both proponents and opponents.

(Blair era Labour is obviously the best known example of this, though people also argued the same about the Socialists in France and the SDP in Germany.)

I would argue there's still a fundamental philosophical split here between "social democrats" and "democratic socialists" The Online Left definitely thinks so

I.e. starting from the "liberal" position that the moral and constitutional order of government is based on "whatever the people decide is ok" but believing that they *should* decide based on general social welfare

Vs. starting from the actual "socialist" POV - "morally and constitutionally, all the means of production in society are owned by society in common" - and then saying "but the best way for society to decide what to do with it is through liberal democratic norms"

Right but this is defining socialism as Marxism. There were lots of socialists in Marx's time who though electoral democracy was a fair way to equalize society.
