Arthur Chu Retweeted Alisha Grauso

Arthur Chu added,
I mean...I was 16 when the song came out, it was a silly hit, and then they never had another song. I wasn't exactly sitting and analyzing the social significance of the lyrics and neither did I have the internet then to find random facts.
I'm not blaming random people for not knowing it, it's just shocking how far the appropriation went
Well, think about it: It was a song that came out in 1997, before the internet was ubiquitous for the very people the song mocked, and the band never had another hit in the U.S. It's not surprising that people didn't really know about their entirely different vibe in the U.K.
Yeah what I mean is it's amazing they reached that degree of cultural penetration in another country as a one-hit wonder with the context of the song completely stripped away
I guess they would eventually be outdone by "Gangnam Style" (I don't think you need to know what the lyrics of "Gangnam Style" say to know the video is a song sneering at social climbers and poseurs but most Americans didn't seem to care)
