It's technically a caucus (like the Iowa caucus), just run like an election rather than the old fashioned way

The whole thing about a "firehouse primary" (a "primary" that's actually a caucus run by the party, not an election run by the state) is it's always like this The party doesn't have taxpayer money, the budget to run the election is way lower

That's where the term "firehouse primary"/"firehouse caucus" comes from, they'd have only one polling place in a donated space like a firehouse

Anyway, sure, of course it sucks and a real primary run by the state would be better It's still exponentially more accessible than a traditional caucus where you stand around and yell in a room, which is what ND had in 2016

It's hard to call this DNC ratfucking when the result of the DNC Unity Commission was a big push to get away from caucuses altogether in favor of state-run primaries - one which Sanders surrogates like Zogby and Konst loudly opposed

Yes, the states have always been in charge of the primaries, but the DNC has always had the power to decide whether to seat their delegates at the convention - in fact this is one of the ONLY forms of direct power the DNC has

Replying to @arthur_affect @thecaitiedays and
It is SUPER disingenuous to claim the DNC "can't" demand the state governments use taxpayer funds to run primaries They absolutely can do that, if they want to, or else tell the state they forfeit representation at the convention It's how the whole system works

There was a huge groundswell of support for abolishing caucuses entirely after 2016 and Konst and Zogby were the two loudest voices on the Commission against doing it (or "recommending" it)
