Or the Back to the Future trilogy itself, which vacillates on how much it believes in progress (they joke about how backward attitudes were in the 1950s, or the 1880s, but the movie doesn't *care* that much, the emphasis is on people being people all the same)

The future as shown in Pt II is just wacky nonsense that doesn't take the idea of social or technological progress seriously, the ending of Pt III is Doc being perfectly happy moving to the 1880s permanently

Yeah, when I saw that when I was young, I had a hard time understanding why anyone would want to do that.
