All through the 1990s Mr Rogers was seen by adults as a hilarious target to mock as everything corny and cringey about old school children's TV The tide didn't start turning until he died in 2003, and even then the sheer devotion to him in the late 2010s would've been weirdhttps://twitter.com/blanketboat/status/1236835096541290497 …

I mean... Barney and the rest of it YES, 100%, but I still remember Rogers being a somewhat special case who had a kind of extra armor (maybe because he was still a living public figure?) for the most part. Like the MOST famous riff people remember was Murphy...
-
...and his joke was less about Rogers than about race/class difference. The "darkest" take-off I know of was when Carrey did it *once* on IN LIVING COLOR; and even the idea of it was treated as so off-limits they promoted the episode on that one sketch for weeks...

I suppose people just like to obsess over stuff they dislike. It's very human.

In fairness though, there are legit reasons to hate Friends.
-
I felt like the only person who didn't watch that (why watch some stupid sitcom when Cartoon Network was showing anime?) But apparently I was in good company.

I suspect a lot of the Gen-X hate for Barney (also Elmo) stemmed from childhood memories of how weird and anarchic '70s kids' shows were by comparison -- early Sesame Street, the Electric Company, ZOOM, etc.
-
My hate for Elmo is two-fold: 1) he took time away from Grover; and 2) he single-handedly dragged Snuffy from imaginary friend into reality.

I remember that. I wanted to share a bunch of Barney bash collection, even from 1992, a Hypercard applet "Look, it's a Barney." *microphone thwacks for gunshots*
