I don't think there is a conscious strategy behind this behavior, but if there were it would be based on the assumption the vast majority of ordinary people agree with them, and the issue isn't convincing anyone but just emboldening them to stand up to the eliteshttps://twitter.com/sannewman/status/1236658559812861959 …

Coincidentally this is a similar kind of argument racists make, that everyone agrees with them but isn’t willing to say so publicly

There's a whole lot of people that don't get the fundamental fallacy in "x many people say they would vote for a 3rd party". Every one of those people has a different ideal they're envisioning. Running any actual person 3rd party just makes those people say they want a 4th.

You just have to build a coalition, folks. You just do. No shortcut. And "taking over the democratic machine" isn't going to help you at all if you don't account for a VERY large part of what makes that an actual thing is the people willing to do the work.

I think it also comes down to basic ego too. So many Bernie supporters (though not all of course) seem to view the mere fact that they support Bernie to be absolute proof that they are smarter and better then others (*especially* other liberals) and feel no need to hide it.
