No, I know, I'm just saying that it's not a very popular location in the Western consciousness and so when somebody sees "virus" and "Wuhan", they're inclined to be like "whoa, trippy!"

Oh yeah thats fair. It’s just. I think ppl need to understand how absolutely massive Wuhan is.

I mean it's deceptive right? because China is full of Wuhans. Harbin has the same number of residents and it's pretty much the Anchorage, AK of China

Well they might argue that it's more like they're the Minneapolis but unlike Minneapolis, Harbin A) isn't known for its rich heritage of funk rock and synth pop and B) is practically in Siberia

Harbin is the 8th largest city in China overall so that's not really a fair comparison

The point can be made just by pointing out that the 8th largest city in China has around 10 million people while the 1st largest city in the US, New York, has 8 million (and our 8th largest, San Diego, has 1.3 million)

The better comparison might be to just compare the Northeast of China to the Northeast of the US, with the same reputation for "harsh long winters" but nonetheless being of great cultural importance to the history of the country, it's like Boston

Yeah that's fair. I just meant in the sense that everyone I've ever known from Beijing/Shanghai seems to think of it as basically Jötunheim

NE China used to be "Inner Manchuria" so there's specific cultural baggage there about Harbin being "not quite Chinese", although the baggage is different because the Manchu in fact ruled China during the Qing Dynasty (so it's not like Alaska's history with colonization)

The equivalent to Anchorage, both in terms of being relatively tiny and isolated, being literally in the far northwest of the country, and being a locus of imperialism and genocide is Urumqi

What's happening right now is the same as what happened when US oil companies brought in white people to Anchorage by the trainload to make Alaska into a state (in Xinjiang it's natural gas)

ah yeah that's a much better comparison
