I guess it is a weird econ moment to think about how people actually trying to make sanitizer from vodka because pharmaceutical alcohol - which is way, way cheaper by volume - has run out In Econ 101 they'd call this a failure of the pricing mechanism

Ethanol is in fact somewhat more effective at killing viruses than isopropyl alcohol but is more expensive so less commonly used Partly because ethanol sold pharmaceutically has to be strictly regulated and contaminated to make it undrinkable
