The most basic thing is that Aladdin is from China. The Arabian setting was, officialy, because One Thousand and One Nights is from the Middle East. The real reason for it was because Katzenberg is a petty sack of salt and tried to steal and undermine The Thief and The Cobbler.

Well, it's not just that, the original story isn't culturally Chinese at all, he's in China because that's what someone from the Middle East at the time would've thought of as "the ends of the Earth" "Aladdin" is obviously not a (Han) Chinese name

The narration in the story has Scheherazade mention she unfortunately can't give that much detail about the setting because she doesn't know anything about China
