"some people were mean to me online so now poor people can't have health insurance" is the new "it's about ethics in gaming journalism"

To elaborate, health insurance for poor people is good. We should have it and there are sincere people concerned about it. But the people this line gets used against are overwhelmingly not against it, and the people using the line are overwhelmingly more into bashing minorities

I really love the implication of „it’s only words on the internet, it isn’t real“ argument.

It's more than that, it's the implication that [obviously good thing] is only championed by harassers, so if you're not harassing people online and in line with what the harassers think is the best solution, you're against [obviously good thing]

Right, but there's also a huge barrel of assumptions inserted in between "I must do whatever is necessary to get health care for poor people" and "the thing that is necessary is to harass people, mostly women, online, especially ones who mostly agree with me & want health care"

Quite similar to "we want ethics in gaming journalism," there's unwarranted assumptions regardless of the worthiness of the cause that the people being targeted are against that and even questions about what the term means. And, again, lots of misogyny

Right, it's not even about ends justifying means It's about the idea that the harassment, whether or not it accomplishes anything, is *evidence* of how strongly you feel about the healthcare crisis, it *proves* that you're emotionally invested, that you really care

In other words it's a form of - dare I say it - virtue signaling
