Megan McArdle's thread is badly written and I don't like her but I do think someone smarter should be looking into her core point of "What if the virus just gets us out of the habit of going places and a lot of people find out they don't miss it"

I traveled from Maryland to Canada on business for a couple of years. I understand why it was necessary but it took a toll on me. I rarely travel now; I burned out on it.

the epidemic is horrible, but a silver lining for me at least is that all the business travel my employer had acknowledged prevented it from actually cutting its carbon emissions, but was implicitly deemed more important than climate goals, is suddenly actually cancelled!

International Academic conferences ,you have to be at to get your work published in their journals, just happen to be in major tourist destinations and to have weirdly low attendance on the last day too (and the announcement of the next one is always a puffery for the location)

I've been self isolating for 5 yrs, just waiting for the rest of the world to catch up. Do you think the Olympics should go ahead?

Olympic-level facilities for most sports are standardized, right? Just have each country's athletes do their events in the nearest ones, and compare all their times/scores/whatever.

YUP. Ecologically awful, wastes of time and money, and plague vectors even when there's not an epidemic going on. Serve no purpose that the Internet can't. (Also hoping this makes more companies realize that most jobs don't need butts in seats and *that's* 80% a BS requirement.)
