"Stop using a cultural phenomenon that almost everyone from a certain generation can understand!!" I'm sorry but framing things using well-known fiction to increase understanding is something we've done SINCE FICTION WAS FIRST CREATED and you should probably get over it https://twitter.com/firs_in/status/1235799421381574657 …

Jesus Christ we've had to sit and listen to Gen X compare literally everything they ever come across ever to 1984 but we can't make a few Hogwarts references? In a few years it'll be Warrior Cats or something. This is the point of fiction. Just shut up.

1984 was written in 1948 (the title is a reversal of the digits of the year to make it in the future), it's not a Gen X thing

Gen X must have learned it in school or something because Gen X comparing everything that happens to 1984 is a thing

That's really everybody, it's been in school curriculums since the 50s (so it's really a Boomer thing)

Gen X really don't like people mentioning things that are Gen X things huh.

I have 5 Gen X siblings and grew up with their friendship groups being hugely influential in my life. I remember dramatic comparisons to 1984 specifically from Gen X people. But sure, Boomers probably did it as well, making it a 2 generation everything gets compared to this book

The point is, Harry Potter being used as a comparison for things is not something new Millenials have invented, it's just Millenials are using a book that we all read. Like previous generations with books like 1984

I mean sure, the Harry Potter dunks are annoying, but I would argue fandom isn't the same as people referencing a book they were specifically taught in classrooms because it was written as a political allegory

Not that facile use of the word "Orwellian" to describe everything the government does it disagree with isn't also annoying
