Arthur Chu Retweeted Todd in the Shadows

The biggest surprise for kids these days is that in every version of the story up to Disney Aladdin's mom was alive and was an extremely well known stock character The Widow Twankey, as Brits know her, is the original "man dressed in drag" jokehttps://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/1235621574486757383 …

I have no idea what actually happens in the non-Disney version of Aladdin

The joke is that the original and highly relatable story of Aladdin is a Chinese failson living with his constantly nagging mom who finally gets off his ass and becomes the wealthiest prince in the world through genie magic just to shut her up

Anyway Disney's Aladdin was Howard Ashman's pet project before he died and he specifically wanted Aladdin to reverse the Disney Dead Mother trope by having an emotional mother/son relationship be the heart of the story

His song "Proud of Your Boy", Aladdin's big "I Want" Song, was considered by his colleagues to be his masterpiece ...But Disney studio chair and misogynistic shithead Jeffrey Katzenberg hated the whole concept and buried the project

Until after Ashman conveniently died of AIDS, allowing Katzenberg to take the pitched script and eviscerate it, demanding a total rewrite in a meeting Ashman's colleagues seriously refer to as "Black Friday" One of his notes being "86 the mom, the mom's a zero"

In the final version not only does Jasmine have a living dad and dead mom, but Aladdin 3 reveals Aladdin's dad is also alive, thus giving this franchise TWO Disney Dead Moms, in a complete reversal of Ashman's intent

In fact the whole thing that some find controversial about Aladdin, that he doesn't feel bad at all about being a criminal, is down to Katzenberg, who thought Proud of Your Boy" with Aladdin desperately wanting to be respectable to save his mother from shame was emasculating

Anyway, the Broadway stage version of Aladdin restores "Proud of Your Boy", splitting the difference by having Aladdin sing it to his dead mom's spirit after a personal epiphany, and that restoration is the main justification of the show's existence

Anyway, fun fact Gavin McInnes apparently heard this song and was incensed by it, seeing it as emblematic of the emasculation and worthlessness of millennial masculinity, and founded the alt-right "Proud Boys" in direct response to this song and named after it

See, a *real man* would've stayed defiant and pissed after Prince Achmed calls Aladdin a shame to his family and his ancestors, instead of brought to his knees by shame over it and singing a sappy ballad

It's part of Disney's liberal agenda trying to get disaffected young white men to blame themselves for their own problems, etc Sigh History, it rhymes
