After being praised to the heavens for being a "unity" candidate in 2008, Obama's polls with white people began to slide when he spoke up about the Prof. Gates incident and plummeted when he spoke up about Trayvon Martinhttps://twitter.com/perdricof/status/1235613468671315969 …

really stunning how literally every time warren talked about her personal experiences with sexism, vast swathes of people (including on the left!) decided she was a malicious, deceptive liar

I'm convinced the first female prez will be a republican white lady, for this reason.

A lot of people thought the first black president would have to be a Republican, possibly Colin Powell. It wasn't, but Obama *did* have to tread very carefully about race to be accepted, and it was at a moment when political salience of race was unusually low.

That's a fair point. In my mind, that Obama got the nom sort of indicated that (at least in this case) sexism was going to be a more difficult hurdle to overcome; 2016 felt like it supported that view that a little bit.

Obama and Clinton were not symmetrical in 2008 - Obama was very much perceived as new blood and Clinton as carrying the baggage of the past, and that would've been true had they both been white men

That said, of course, racism and sexism are not symmetrical, and the whole point is that it's because she's a woman that Clinton was in the position of campaigning as someone else's wife (and not having a wife of her own to market to the voters as "FLOTUS material" etc) Still

She was campaigning as someone else's wife? Huh. I didn't see much of that. Maybe people saw her that way instead of as secretary of state, senator, etc.... Because sexism.
