I agree. I asked you a practical question. How do you write a character as a woman? Or maybe the opposite of that: how do you write a character as a man?

Does it really matter? You're inventing a character. You can put whatever kinds of experiences you want into your character. Especially if you're not trying to make social commentary, pretty much anything goes.

To wit, Star Control II's main character is canonically a man, but he could easily be a woman instead with no story changes just by modifying the ending cutscene to say "grandma" instead of "grandpa".

True. But the question is, why does it matter to you?

The same reason representation matters for anyone else. When you see trans people taking lead roles in stories as normal people, you stop viewing us as strange beings and start viewing us as what we are: normal people with hopes and dreams like everyone else.

Incidentally, I think Star Control II would have been massively better if the main character's gender was just not shown in the ending cutscene. It was unnecessary.

It was revealed before the cutscene, in the interaction with Talana, which was a pretty awkward moment in an otherwise standout game

I mean, it is kind of wacky that I can choose between my hero being an idealistic Captain Picard type or a narcissistic fascist Emperor of Mankind but the Talana "romance" plays out the exact same way either way

Eh, I always thought the scene was ambiguous enough to be a pair of lesbians.
Though in all fairness that scene hasn't aged well anyhow.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
IIRC the scene makes it pretty clear you're a man, the scene has her straight up tell you the Syreen are all excited to meet you because most of their men are dead, etc

The whole concept of the Syreen is so intentionally schlocky and dumb, which is why it's mindfuckingly hilarious that Bioware ripped it off wholesale for the Asari

LOL. Syreen in a nutshell: "blue space women". I like their ship, but their character could use some work.
Nowhere near as interesting as the Androsynth and you don't even see them.0 replies 0 retweets 0 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
