If the difference between Bernie and any other candidate is tens of thousands of lives lost each year to lack of health coverage then it's not a good thing at all that Bernie doesn't pander Bernie should be pandering like that blood will be on his hands if he doesn't

It's just so backwards People act like unwillingness to tell white lies, smile and shake hands with assholes, couch everything in polite fake language, etc is proof you're serious about what you believe To me it's proof that you aren't

There's a user-end problem here: someone who is shaking hands with assholes and telling white lies to sneak through progressive policy is not observationally distinguishable from an actual status quo politician. That's the whole point of the deception.

I suppose that's true if the only thing you ever notice about a politician is their tone

The other thing about tone moderation is that the requirements have a habit of expanding such that *any* articulation of certain criticisms is "improper tone" in one way or another. Or, as you moderate it more, people will just lie and insist you're an angry mob regardless.

Yes, it is generally true that any criticism of anyone can be escalated in bad faith so that it's impossible to satisfy This isn't just true of "tone" criticisms but all criticisms

"You keep calling my candidate less informed than the other candidates but you could just keep asking for more policy detail again and again until I have a 14,000 page dissertation and you still wouldn't be satisfied" Etc You hear it from defensive people about everything

The idea that because tone arguments can be made in bad faith means they're never valid at all and there's zero value in even trying to control your tone... Well, good luck with that

Do you see how this argument is more or less identical in form to what it's criticising? "You make this claim, but claims like yours could equally be made in bad faith, and thus should be dismissed."

The efficacy of tone moderation in any given situation is a factual statement whose truth can be observed. And in the case of left-wing social movements, it is factually and observably true that tone moderation has almost never accomplished anything.

Okay, well, again, good luck with that
