I don't think people quite understand that no matter how morally depraved someone's reason for voting is and however likely it is God will send them to Hell for it in the future, the vote still counts and materially affects the outcome of the electionhttps://twitter.com/TracyLBaker1/status/1235023534058926081 …

The way people have turned "pandering" into a swear word, my God If you actually think lives hang in the balance then you want every single vote you can possibly get, including the ones you get for completely shallow, idiotic reasons *Especially* those ones

If the difference between Bernie and any other candidate is tens of thousands of lives lost each year to lack of health coverage then it's not a good thing at all that Bernie doesn't pander Bernie should be pandering like that blood will be on his hands if he doesn't

It's just so backwards People act like unwillingness to tell white lies, smile and shake hands with assholes, couch everything in polite fake language, etc is proof you're serious about what you believe To me it's proof that you aren't

If the election were a game that didn't matter there would be value in losing with style, losing but staying honest and true to yourself, losing but getting your message out there If it's a matter of life and death then all forms of losing are just losing

I think you just invalidated your own argument... if 1) you believe people should be willing to tell white lies and shake hands with assholes because it will get them more votes, but 2) you admit that this opinion is not widely shared, then you should be willing to admit 3)...

... that doing so will actually lose them at least some votes as well. The question then becomes: how many votes gained and lost, and where that line of behavior is. If you are in the minority opinion, the line probably isn't where you think it should be.

I mean yeah, I know that I am absolutely in no doubt that abrasiveness is in fact very helpful to Sanders' brand and has helped fuel his rise, and created extremely robust followings and lucrative careers for some of his fans

It just obviously has a ceiling - you can gain fans really fast by pissing other people off and giving those fans someone to feel passionately angry at, but eventually you run out of new fans to convert and you have to deal with the enemies you've made

And Sanders seems to be running into that ceiling sooner than he thought he would

There is definitely a timing element to that equation, yes.
