I think you just invalidated your own argument... if 1) you believe people should be willing to tell white lies and shake hands with assholes because it will get them more votes, but 2) you admit that this opinion is not widely shared, then you should be willing to admit 3)...

... that doing so will actually lose them at least some votes as well. The question then becomes: how many votes gained and lost, and where that line of behavior is. If you are in the minority opinion, the line probably isn't where you think it should be.
