The whole reason the Democratic primary is not run as a first-past-the-post election is specifically to try to avoid this "two-party system" dynamic within its own organizing

I haven't been understanding their reaction on that. The stated goal at the beginning was to keep a base and win because no one else could get a majority in a big field. Obviously moderates dropping out was not going to help him, but they acted like each was a personal victory.
