Okay, let's say we solve the square cube law and build mecha. Are there any non-arbitrary reasons why tanks aren't better? If not, what are some bullsht reasons I can use for stories that aren't that absurd?

In the game Brigador, it mentions that mechs are actually impractical, but they are used because of the fear a large walking war machine instills in opposing forces and the confidence it instills in allies. Troop morale is a vital factor in war.

One of if not the very first "mecha" was in Cordwainer Smith's story "Three to a Given Star" from 1965, where this was the whole point - the weapon is a 200-meter tall anatomically accurate statue of a man designed to make the alien species associate the human form with fear

And part of the point of that story is the mecha wasn't the real weapon, it's a weapon of terror designed to pacify and subjugate the aliens but if it doesn't work the real weapon is a small black cube that will snuff out their sun
