I think the disconnect is IRL colonial powers often give up against natives with less tech and wealth cos you inflict enough casualties that occupation isn't worth it, but in action films the Big Bad deciding to go home cos he's not bothered with all the hassle is anti-climatic

A decent work around could be soldiers so entrenched in destroying and conquering the natives that they go rogue even when the guys back home want to cut their losses. A comparison could be South Africa
