Without getting too handwavy and Panglossian ("everything that exists is already the optimal way it should be"), humans and dogs and horses are pretty much the right shape for what they are (legs are much more versatile than wheels)

I may be remembering incorrectly, but I recall in one of the early scenes when there's still functioning artilery, one of the tripods gets hit by a lucky shot in one leg, which fells it. (So if you're going to have spiderlike mecha, have redundant legs?)
