Oh so are we allowed to talk about who might stay home under what circumstances now without being accused of personally wanting to deny people healthcare https://twitter.com/MattTheGweat/status/1233531371588591619 …

How is one instance of "If you piss off a candidate's supporters in the primary they may not turn out in the general" different from another

This is a hypothetical scenario where the person with the most votes is denied the nomination. A person who *didn’t* get the most votes *not* being the nominee is just democracy. This isn’t complicated.

If you don't get a majority then you didn't get the most votes

Jfc you know an actual FPTP plurality system is deeply perverse and is never how someone actually plans a voting system to work, right, like even the general election is actually supposed to be based on a majority of electors

And this is generally obvious to everyone and would suddenly become obvious to Bernie fans again if tides shifted and we went into the convention with Bloomberg having a plurality of 20% or something

We don't even need to do hypotheticals In 1988, the last time we had a contested convention, with Dukakis coming in with 40% of the vote and Jackson with 30%, Dukakis asked for delegates from all the other white candidates and ignored Jackson

At the time, the progressive take was that this was a shitty thing to do to steamroll Jackson and Jackson's 2nd place position entitled him to demand concessions from Dukakis and by ignoring him the white establishment was subverting how the process should work

Now because of who's ahead and who's behind the supposed leftist take is the opposite, that a plurality in the first round ought to mean an instant coronation and anyone who doesn't give up their delegates for free is a Republican mole Okay I guess
