What the fuck is a "non-refundable security deposit". Isn't the point of a security deposit that it's refundable. If it isn't given back then isn't that just a bribe

If you go on landlord forums they openly talk about this as a way to squeeze tenants a little more and increase profit in high turnover markets, even though they try to frame it as compensating them for inevitable cleaning costs

My bad, didn’t know we were talking about a rental contest. A “non refundable deposit” is just a fee, but the law in the jurisdiction might make such a thing illegal. (Eg there are often rules about having to hold tenant security deposits in segregated interest bearing accts)
