You can be against slavery and colonialism and still be a racist, and historically most white people who held those positions were, it's not some kind of huge contradiction

Wasn't it common in Europe at the time for people to use the n-word for other European groups they believed to be lesser than their group? It, of course, does not excuse Marx. It also made it easier to dehumanize people and pave the way for the mass killings of the 20th Century.
