I can't decide which missing the explicit mechanics of the plot read of ARRIVAL I hate more, NDGT's or the one where it's "pro-life"

"What kind of a monster wouldn't just warn her daughter about the rock climbing accident?!" etc

I think it's more that the writer wasn't willing to cope with the full implications of the story. I think it could have been conveyed, but he just didn't want to write a movie whose moral was "you can either know the future, or have free will, but not both".

Right, which is why you get the idea that the movie has a "moral", that it was the "right choice" to marry the guy even though she knew they'd divorce, or it was the "right choice" to have the kid even though she knew she'd die

Also I will say that the change allows the Chinese general and the heroine to have more parallelism, since then they're both coping with deaths of loved ones from cancer. And changing his wife's death to rock climbing would stretch credulity

A car accident would be the same kind of thing though
