I forget where I first heard this theory, but I do remember it was in the context of the first season of Veronica Mars. The best way to resolve a mystery is that it's always the one you suspect the most medium.

Not the choice that would be simple or obvious, but also not a lightning bolt out of a clear sky.

Probably a good example of this, some people guessing that Missy in Doctor Who was a female regeneration of the Master.

On the other hand, it IS possible to pull off revelations that truly surprise people. The last one that got me was in an indie adventure game called Unavowed; within Star Wars, KOTOR was a good example. Jade Empire too.

Funny how Bioware was "the M. Night Shyamalan of RPGs" before they were "the people who always put gay romance in RPGs"

I thought the Solas reveal in Dragon Age Inquisition, paying off more in the Trespasser DLC, was pretty good. It's been torture waiting for that shoe to drop in DA4 The way it recontextualizes EVERYTHING HE SAYS AND DOES is great. Thought he was a rando hippie apostate at first

And yet when you go back through the game people have found all of these little hints and details that showed something was up, and once or twice he blatantly admits what he is and the game just moves on It's a BIG SHOCKING REVEAL that's more shocking in its fridge logic

There should be more reveals that are just the random character turning out to be the Devil

What I love about Solas is that he's not the devil, he's a freedom fighter who made a horrible mistake. And you / your world is the mistake. And because you think he's a rando, you don't notice that he's drilling into you how the world is fundamentally broken all along

I mean he's literally the Devil figure of its religion, and then you learn that that wasn't an accurate telling of events, and then when you get the complete picture he still is the Devil

I guess Anders from DA2 is the better example, but I could see that one coming, I just didn't realize the game would have the balls to do it
