this is like the time in middle school I told somebody that there would be repercussions for doing something and they ran to a teacher and said I threatened to give them concussions https://twitter.com/ghostctc/status/1232139900755021824 …

I'm still somewhat mad about how that movie was bad despite obviously having the blueprint of a much better movie inside it. Feels like some higher-up decided the script was too abrasive and too queer and ham-handedly toned down and no-homo'd it. Alas, I have no proof of this.

It's kind of the opposite, the brides were originally much younger and it was pitched as a "teen comedy" (with Emma Roberts and Nikki Reed) and they aged up the brides to late 20s so they could go raunchier and edgier

Which fits the misogynistic "Bridezilla" stereotype better ("She's overinvested because she's desperate and pathetic") in a way that destroys all pretense of realism (these are supposed to be successful adult professionals)

But yeah obviously it's one of those movies that demands a slash fanfic ending, which Anne Hathaway abruptly switching fiances to end up with Kate Hudson's brother almost feels like it's gesturing toward

I mean. The movie starts by showing the two of them in childhood, playing pretend at getting wed to each other. If that were a different-sex pair, they'd end up together with 95% likelihood. Not to mention, as you said, the 12th Night-style twist with the brother.

Oh yeah the movie is absolutely about the fact that these two are way more important to each other than either of their fiances, who end up being literally disposable It's not just about that in an interesting way

Their denial over this fact may be the reason they don't just take the obvious solution to their little dilemma and just hold a double wedding

Chris Pratt ends up getting unceremoniously dumped just for asking the question of why Anne Hathaway is engaging in such apparently uncharacteristically childish behavior because it forces her to confront the sham nature of their whole relationship
