I guess this is the moment I take my mask off and reveal I was a neocon war hawk all along but hey if a US President publicly committed to never taking military action against China under any circumstances I would be pretty worriedhttps://twitter.com/RiegerReport/status/1231653841084522498 …

COOPER: If China took military action against Taiwan, is that something you would— SANDERS: That's something—yeah. I mean I think we have got to make it clear to countries around the world that we will not sit by and allow—invasions to take place... pic.twitter.com/R3LXIoXJlH

Weren’t we bound by a treaty to come to their defense?

We were, but not anymore, since we no longer recognize the ROC as a country after we opened relations with the PRC in the 1970s (they're two competing governments for the same country so it's a one or the other deal)

What would happen if we recognized them as two countries?

      A whole lot of unpleasantness.

I can see why, but it's weird. As it is we're just declaring that Taiwan belongs to the mainland. Hard to even say an "invasion" is wrong by that logic (it would be)

When the US recognized the PRC as the rightful government of China we annulled the treaty we'd previously had with the ROC and replaced it with the Taiwan Relations Act This was a precondition for doing so insisted upon by Barry Goldwater and other Cold War hawks

The Taiwan Relations Act does not commit to aid against the PRC - it can't, since it's not a treaty with a country - but does commit in broad terms to maintaining the status quo re: the governance of Taiwan and cross-strait relations

So while we aren't technically committed to starting a war in defense of Taiwan, the PRC has always had the general understanding that that's what an actual invasion of Taiwan would amount to, which is why they haven't done it
