Proof number 567 that JJ isn't that smart. He got that the junk-trader revelation was important, but didn't understand why. All he saw was Rey's humiliation and not the thematic impact.

I'm pretty sure JJ Abrams is actually a droid and when he's directing he has two modes "ACTION!" and "Nostalgic reference".

So his cameo in the movie was typecasting?

Some have suggested that D-O being a droid who was abusedis a reference to how JJ Abrams brought Star Wars back, all of his ideas were supposedly tossed out in TLJ and then he was brought back to "right" it. I think it's a bit of a stretch, but who knows.

It sure was something that not only was there a droid with clear and emphasized signs of abuse, but that this was never part of an arc, AND that it was JJ's chosen avatar. There is... fertile ground for exploration of JJ's impetus for doing such a thing.

Officially JJ voicing D-O is one of those things where the director does a placeholder voice to demonstrate how they want it to sound but it's good enough that they just kept it
