In theory people say that adults are held to a higher standard than children and that's why they have authority over them But they don't really fucking believe it They believe adults have power over children *by right* and therefore have *more* right to "make mistakes"

If I said your boss should have the right to have you whipped for making a mistake at work you wouldn't tolerate it But people defend the right of parents to beat kids over mistakes kids make with much more minor consequences that they're much less likely to learn from
