Arthur Chu Retweeted Am I the Asshole?

The fact that the cops just went along with this charade flies in the face of the narrative that they're working very hard to keep us safe from real dangershttps://twitter.com/AITA_reddit/status/1231738740982341633 …

I'm sorry I didn't sign up to pay the salaries of a bunch of actors to go help some shitty dad discipline his daughter through bullshit intimidation tactics

Calling the fucking cops to intentionally traumatize your kid with the fear of prison is not just a "mistake"

Wow, my dad taught me a lot of really harsh lessons too And as a result I did not finish college on time and I crumpled in the face of adult life I guess I must just suck

Yeah ok whatever I don't know anything about your story but hey a PhD and a PhD worked as hard as they could to discipline their gifted son and keep him away from the distractions and temptations of a fallen world and they got a failure who graduated with a 1.9 GPA in six years

Maybe I'm just genetically shitty and all their efforts were for naught, I dunno But if it's fair for someone like you to go around and give your parents' harsh discipline credit for your success it's just as fair for me to blame my parents for my many failures

Let me tell you what "lessons" I would have learned - did learn - in this girl's place: 1) People in power are capricious and untrustworthy 2) Who's truly morally right in a situation doesn't matter, only what you can make powerful people believe based on prejudice

      3) Because of this, it is never worth the risk to stick your neck out to make something right, you have to protect yourself above all else and second-guess any impulses you have These are all lessons that are, in a sense, valid and true It is a true lesson she has a shitty dad

But these aren't lessons that set you up for any kind of happiness or success They definitely don't set you up to have healthy, fulfilling or lasting relationships with other people They set you up for a life based on hierarchy and fear

She obviously already knew that her dad at least couldn't be trusted with the information re: the friend or bully. I know my kids would just tell me "don't want to tell you who but I need to buy lunch for someone whose family is struggling, can I have an extra $2?"

Okay and he FAILED He found out - has objective evidence - that he didn't know the whole story and his daughter was trying to make the best of an impossible situation He still doesn't think this means he should reevaluate his own actions or that he jumped to conclusions
