In boot camp they taught us to cough into your shirt (like, under your undershirt)

This was what I always did and a gay sailor in my class kept going "eww" at me

I was always taught to cough into my sleeve. Which makes wearing a short-sleeve shirt while I have a cold a bit frustrating.
If we culturally wore masks when we were sick that would be better though. -
Coughing into your bare elbow is better than coughing into your bare hand since no one touches your elbow

I’m glad the new standard is to cough into one‘s arm, but I’m sure parents taught kids to cover their mouth to stop them from coughing and sneezing directly onto other people

Have you never seen a toddler cough directly into someone's face

Yeah, I was always told to cough or sneeze into my elbow or my upper arm. They were very specific about NOT coughing into our hands, and washing them if we did. (This was in the early 90s)

This is going to turn into one of those generational “tells”. Like people born between X-Y years tend to do this, or remember being taught this

They told us to cough into the crook of your elbow. Atomised droplets can go a surprisingly long way if you don't cover your mouth at all but coughing into your hand is foolish. Coughing into a tissue is utterly pointless. The bugs go right through.

I always hated coughing/sneezing into my hands; makes them moist & gross. I usually pull the collar if my shirt up in front of my face; no place for anything to go except get trapped.
