I could be completely misremembering this, but I feel like there was at one point a thing where the "official" TREK lore-keeper people had a semi-rigid lockdown on what had then been a steadily-building push to present Seven as bisexual in post-ST:V non-TV media...

...because (if I'm remembering *any* of this correctly?) part of the BIG scandal with her divorce and the ex-husband making her go to fetish clubs was he had a public/voyeur thing and she wasn't keen on w/w so it was seen as (somehow) a negative "change" for the character...

...but now I'm looking and I can't find that exact reference (now all anyone remembers is the divorce ended up creating Obama's political career) and I think(?) Ryan came out bi herself in 2010/11 or thereabouts so

Either way, if they were writing the same show today you'd need one of those cat-training spray bottles to keep any writers room AWAY from *immediately* defaulting to "newly-conscious childlike-adult robot gets oedipal-crush on first authority-figure" cliche with Seven/Janeway.

Which is kind of hilarious given that irl Kate Mulgrew despised Jeri Ryan and was openly and gratuitously abusive to her on set

I used to be mutuals with Mulgrew on Facebook (she friended a ton of people and was a heavy self promoter). I had no idea she was such a terrible person.

She had her reasons to be really angry about the way they fired Jennifer Lien and replaced her with Jeri Ryan but yeah there's really no excuse for treating another human being that way

It's kind of funny because when she started on Orange is the New Black she joked about being typecast as an abusive tyrant when that was nothing like her

What Red does to Piper in S1 of OITNB pretty much is what she did to Jeri Ryan on Voyager, the freezeout silent treatment "Nobody may speak to her, nobody may acknowledge her, nobody may show her any kindness or it will be known they have chosen her over me"

That whole "I'm not touching you" passive aggressive kind of abuse (which Red resorts to because they're in prison and Mulgrew irl resorted to because they were shooting a Star Trek TV show, which is kind of like prison)

That whole thing was a shit-show, looking back on it. Mostly stemming from VOYAGER being made to carry all of UPN for years - Mulgrew replaced Genevieve Bujold who'd quit after *one day* on set, and she came aboard outright refusing to do any romance or "sexy" storylines period..
