I would phrase it as saying most of us learn what being good is in practice by observing how people react to the things we do, and that this is a much more powerful influence on our conscience than abstract philosophy or things we read in books

I'd also say that when people intellectually know they're unlikely to get caught for cheating on their values, the sense of guilt that they feel is really just the animal part of their brain saying "But what if we DO get caught" Making up the watchful eye of God in your head
