People act like they'll never do another "Angry Hulk" movie again but, like... they're not gonna let an automatic $1 Billion title like "WORLD WAR HULK" go unused. "I dunno, I'm kinda tired of the Marvel mov-" "NEXT SUMMER: ...WORLD ...WAR ...HULK!" "-nevermind."

Don't they still have to clear up the distribution rights with Universal

What kind of a sweetheart deal do they have to have to seemingly hold the rights in perpetuity without ever making a solo Hulk movie? We hear of all the Marvel Fox properties that were made solely to keep the rights.

This is slightly complicated, but Universal does not have the rights to make a Hulk movie, those are production rights and Marvel has those They have the *distribution* rights, to sell the movie in theaters

Marvel originally sold all the rights to make and distribute a Hulk movie to Universal in 2003 for the Ang Lee Hulk When that movie flopped, Marvel ended up negotiating a deal with them to get the production rights back but not the distribution rights

That wasn't that big a deal at the time, because Marvel was an independent studio without the money to act as their own distributor The other MCU films were distributed by Paramount but they agreed that The Incredible Hulk franchise would still be distributed by Universal

Unfortunately, then Marvel was bought by Disney, and Disney has a very clear policy that only Disney distributes the movies made by Disney-owned studios so no money goes to their competitors

And the original Hulk deal with Universal doesn't have an expiration date because no one expected this to happen, so as a result the Hulk is in limbo

Marvel has all the IP rights to use the Hulk character any way they want, they just can't make a Hulk feature film and put it in theaters without Universal getting a cut, and the bosses at Disney won't ever let that happen, and Universal sees no reason to do Disney a favor
