The flatbread is not incidental! The flatbread is integral! I don't call fries covered in schwarma and tzatziki a gyro, even if they are delicious.

Like the word "fajita", the term "gyro" properly refers to a cut of meat (it's called a "gyro" because it's meat cut off a vertical turnspit) and Americans who associate it with the way of serving the meat are technically incorrect

This kind of linguistic drift is understandable but annoying It's like how "scampi" is literally the name of a specific animal (little lobsters, aka langoustines) but since they're rarely eaten in America, Americans know the dish as "shrimp scampi"
