Just found out that airplanes usually tend to only carry 5% more fuel than they need and I suddenly feel less safe flying

If you think about it, what would they need tons of extra fuel for? Weather radar means they can be diverted long before getting near their destination, and they don't need a ton of fuel to go around in circles if they have to wait to land, or for an emergency landing

I dunno. I fuel my car up at above a quarter tank on long trips, so I guess I'm extra cautious

Yeah, but your car doesn't have to worry anywhere near as much about how much that fuel weighs effecting fuel efficiency

Yeah all this legroom shit we complain about with airplanes is *because they're airplanes* The extra cost per extra pound of weight goes up dramatically if you're flying than if you're moving along the ground (this is related to the square-cube law)

well, legroom doesn't weigh anything... it does reduce the number of passenger tickets you can sell, though

It's more an issue of "This is why there's a maximum size the plane can be and making them bigger carries rapid diminishing returns"
