Just found out that airplanes usually tend to only carry 5% more fuel than they need and I suddenly feel less safe flying

ok so then why not make the landing gear tough enough that it can land with the maximum amount of fuel and cargo [well, i suppose if you did that it would technically mean you could take off with *even more* cargo, but at a certain point you run into the maximum lift right?]

this seems like the same kind of unnecessary knifes-edge logistics as The Cold Equations, except the worst they do is dump some fuel on a school instead of a passenger out an airlock.
