I do genuinely find the concept of memetics really interesting and useful as a means of analysis, even if the word itself has been bastardized in common usage and the guy who came up with it can be a jerk.

I had a long conversation in college with someone insistent that Lacan came up with everything Dawkins said about "memetics" long ago and people just don't know this because Lacan's prose is completely impenetrable
