That's a thing in The Time Traveler's Wife, Claire is shocked at what a mess Henry's apartment is because he's so meticulously put together whenever she's seen him in the past (when he was time traveling)

And realizes he's one of those kind who's in this state of high alert whenever he's in the outside world (which he often is involuntarily because of his condition) and therefore just switches off whenever he's home and safe
