Wow, somebody listened to all those ridiculous articles about how avocado toast keeps you in debt and is now being a dick to their fiancee about it. YTA, and you're edging into financial abuse with this controlling shit.https://twitter.com/AITA_reddit/status/1228293908859322368 …

There is a vocal minority on Reddit that try to convince everyone they can that any debt is worse than a terminal diagnosis and must be taken care of at all costs. Even the more reasonable Personal Finances folks are clearly trying to find a “middle ground” with those folks.

Yeah the religious/moral view of debt is a horrible meme that ruins as many people's lives as debt itself does Dave Ramsey still makes me mad whenever his name comes up

Dave Ramsey is not like this guy. Mr. Ramsey would tell this guy he's the asshole for not letting his teacher fiance have Avocados or budgeting for an exercise bike. Debt is bad, but 24 to 36 months is JUST as Reasonable, while still enjoying things.

The fact that this guy has taken the Ramsey philosophy "too far" (as these horror stories always do) does not mean the philosophy is completely without fault here The fact that you think doubling the guy's time frame from 18 to 36 months is really generous is telling here

Here's my hot take - 36 months is just as good as 18 months, and so is ten years, or fifty years It's okay if she wants to stay in debt for the rest of her life It's really none of anyone else's business, and if the fiancé can't personally live with it he can take a hike

I'm not saying consumer debt is a good thing, I'm saying it has to be evaluated rationally and calmly based on its effect on a person's actual day to day experience of life, with all moral judgment shoved aside

I wouldn't consider debt to be a morality question - it is a valid means of survival with our current structure. But getting free of debt *once you have the means to* isn't a bad thing, nor is it a race you must hobble yourself to get to. This guy ITA, but the goal is a good one

True. Finances and savings modes are a keystone issue to a relationship - if they can't agree or find something they can each live with, then it's probably better to end it. The 36 mos was a rough estimate based on the numbers he was throwing in for salaries.
