Just a reminder that St. Valentine's Day is actually about a Christian priest who died defending the sanctity of marriage and no one except married heterosexual couples should be celebrating it. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Wow I didn’t know this about St Valentine! I should read about his life. Thanks for the info and sharing your passion for V-day! We’re also going to to dinner on Saturday- but without a baby

I love his story! He was a priest in the 3rd century when the Roman emperor outlawed marriage because he thought it made men poor soldiers. Valentine continued to perform them anyway and was eventually arrested. After refusing to stop he was beheaded on February 14.

This legend is false It is completely unattested in any of the accounts of St. Valentine's life for centuries after his death and appears to have been invented as a poetic fancy in the 17th century, after Valentine's Day became associated with romance for random reasons

How do you know? Were you there? Sincerely wondering why you reject the story.

The story also fundamentally does not make sense if you know the smallest thing about Roman culture, no Emperor would've "banned marriage", the idea is ridiculous

It's the exact opposite - Augustus' law REQUIRED that men and women of marriageable age get married and produce children as one of their duties to the state, and anyone who didn't paid a tax penalty

Which was for many reasons considered an unpopular and burdensome law that was repealed under Constantine, partly because Christian doctrine actively encouraged people to stay unmarried and childless if they were called to lives of holiness
