When people started doing Valentine's Day as a romance holiday in the Middle Ages they *called* it a revival of the Lupercalia festival from ancient Rome but the evidence is they were just making that up, Lupercalia was a "spring cleaning" festival to prepare for the new year

The evidence is that for whatever reason people in medieval England started celebrating sex and romance in February as a "spring is coming" thing and then made up fake traditions linking it to Lupercalia and to the existing Valentine's Day
