Well... yeah, but the lies don't really make sense, or advance any kind of agenda. At least he killed your father/he is your father kinda makes sense in protecting Luke. Not recognizing R2D2 and C3P0? Tht's just weird.

The weirdest bit to me is that Luke kept his last name. You'd think there's be at least one of Ani's little friends that still kept in touch with him (to get rid of parking tickets if nothing else) who would hear about a new Skywalker about.

Yeah, this is one of many, MANY signs that Lucas and friends were making it up as they went along, and didn't care much about continuity. It's not even a real flaw; sometimes I think SW works better if you just enjoy the ride and don't overthink plot details.

I mean prior to Ep. 1 I and I think most fans just assumed Anakin was not from Tattooine. I remember hearing that Owen was actually BEN's estranged brother and not Luke's real uncle

Watch the scene between Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen knowing that Anakin is Vader. Her gentle, rueful smile when she says he has too much of his father in him makes sense if Luke's father was an adventurer who got himself killed in battle. Less so if his father is a genocidal maniac

To be fair, Beru probably thinks genocide against sand people is at best a rascally thing to do

I still strongly headcanon that Tatooine is a sexist society (like the Wild West homesteaders from The Searchers, which Lucas based this scenario on) and Owen knows about the aftermath of the battle with the Tuskens and Beru doesn't, because it's not for women to know

The way their conversation plays out *exactly* matches this, which itself exactly matches people's differing reactions to John Wayne being a "hero" of the Indian Wars in The Searchers

Aunt Beru's small smile at "There's too much of his father in him" and Owen's cold, taciturn "That's what I'm afraid of" He knows Beru's assessment of Anakin as a hero is wrong but he's unwilling to directly discuss it

The facts of the situation she knows - Anakin went off alone to rescue his mother and killed her captors in vengeance - are true And in a racist society that sees Tuskens as subhuman Owen doesn't quite have the words to explain why what he saw disturbs him so much

(The idea of Anakin/Vader really going to town with the creative use of Force powers like in The Force Unleashed when he's upset is such a potent source of black comedy)
